Rise’s Radical Renegade is a monthly series featuring interviews with trailblazing career mavens. Meet Broghanne Jessamine, co-founder of Elemental Women Productions – a New York City based production company producing art that empowers femme voices while exploring, developing and sharing their stories with the world.
Why did you start your company and what motivates you every day?
We began EWP because I was tired of working on productions that I wasn’t proud of. I want to share the stories that femme artists create and experience with the world. So that they know they can relate and they are seen and they are more. I want EWP to produce a spark of hope or joy or thought in every person that sees what we produce and have it be remembered.
What are some of the major lessons you’ve learned along the way?
We are knew but sticking with what you believe and doing what you believe is right despite others having other opinions is important. Being a decent human.
Tell us about a setback you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
We are a new production company. Getting our foot in the door and have people treat us as though we are professionals and not only doing this for a laugh is interesting. A lot of our set back occur in regards to perception and others not believing we are going to follow through. I personally overcame having to describe my company and not have people brush it off by sticking to it and breathing and not letting their words tear me down and think I was unable in making it.
What advice do you have for women who feel stuck in their careers?
My advice is only you can change it. At some point you have to say “f*uck it. What’s the worst that could happen?” And do it anyway.
We all know how difficult work/life balance is. How do you draw the line to create separation in these two spheres?
I am still trying to find that balance. I think it is something you always have to slightly alter all the time. It’s easier when it is something you are passionate about and those around you support you. I have found that only answering emails or doing work between certain hours does keep me from constantly being obsessed with EWP.
We love to support women-founded ventures. Is there a company/product that you’ve come across recently that you think more people should know about?
There are so many! I come across more and more everyday. We Are Women Owned is how I was originally introduced to so many fantastic women founded businesses, Stylenmotion, Rawly Bold, Andie and Erin, The I Am Series. So many!
